What other art experiences are available?
Highland Lakes is offering a art club on Thurdays starting September 2, in Mrs. Looper's room and then rotating to Mrs. Graham's room. This art class is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. We will explore all types of art from 3:30 to 4:00.
Parents occasionally ask me this question when they have a child who loves art and would like to have more opportunities to engage in art activities. I am in the process of putting together information about art activities for children outside of school. I will continue to add to this, but I thought I would share what I have so far. Please let me know about any programs you have heard about so that I can add them to my list.
Arabian Horse Art Contest Do you love horses? The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona is sponsoring their 7th annual art contest! It is open to kindergarten thru 6th grade, and each entry will recieve a t-shirt and are invited to attend the awards presentation on Sunday, February 27, 2011. There will be ribbons awarded to the top 10 winners of each age group: Kindergarten & Grade 1, Grades 2,3&4, and Grades 5&6. If you are interested, here are the rules: all entries must be an interpretation of an Arabian Horse, MUST be mounted on white matboard (Mrs. Graham can help with this!), be 12"x18" or smaller including the mat, and be completed using tempera paint, watercolor, crayon, magic marker, printmaking or mixed media. Entries are due by Friday, January 14, 2011. I am planning on asking my students if they would be interested in doing a unit on animal portraits to see if I can get some Arabian Horse drawings to use. This program offers art, dance, music and theatre classes for children ages five and up. Classes for older teens and adults are available through the Herberger College at Large. Visitors to the Arizona Museum for Youth are exposed to a wide range of innovative exhibits, delightfully displayed at a child's eye level.
